Pulmonary Function Lab

The Pulmonary Function Laboratory provides comprehensive and specialized testing of pulmonary physiology including lung function, exercise testing, respiratory muscle strength, gas exchange, and exhaled breath markers.

Here in the department of Respiratory medicine, CMC, Vellore our PF lab offers the following services:

Spirometry
Diffusion capacity of carbon monoxide
Lung volumes
6-minute walk test
Respiratory drive
Bronchial provocation test
Fraction of exhaled Nitrous oxide
Impulse oscillometry

We are well equipped with 5 Spirometers, 1 body plethysmograph and 1 impulse oscillometer. All 3 methods of Lung volume measurement are done in our lab there are using the Body Plethysmograph, Helium dilution and Nitrogen washout method. Bronchial provocation testing includes both Methacholine Challenge test and exercise challenge testing.

In addition to the above sputum induction is also done both for microbiological analysis as well as sputum eosinophils.

We are able to diagnose a broad spectrum of pulmonary disorders in with the aid of the PF lab services which include obstructive airway diseases like asthma and COPD, Interstitial lung diseases, sarcoidosis, occupational lung disease, respiratory muscle weakness , and other restrictive lung diseases.
