The BSc Respiratory Technology program (formerly Respiratory Therapy) is a three-year course followed by a one-year compulsory internship, affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, with an annual intake of six students. The program was initiated in 2014, and to date, the department has trained 11 batches of Respiratory Technologists.
The curriculum is designed to provide systematic, structured training through a combination of classroom teaching and extensive bedside-based practical exposure. Students receive comprehensive hands-on training in performing basic and advanced pulmonary function tests, bedside management of patients with respiratory disorders, assisting in diagnostic and interventional bronchoscopy and pleural procedures, conducting and interpreting sleep studies, patient education in respiratory diseases, and delivering pulmonary rehabilitation both at the bedside and in the rehabilitation laboratory.
The academic program is followed by a one-year internship, during which trainees consolidate their clinical skills and gain independent clinical experience. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Respiratory Technologists from the department played a pivotal role in the care of patients with respiratory failure, contributing significantly to critical respiratory support services.
Graduates of the program are well placed in reputable healthcare institutions across India and overseas, reflecting the strength and quality of the training imparted by the department.
